first_img Lokomotiv Moscow striker Oumar Niasse 1 Everton are edging closer to the deadline day signing of Lokomotiv Moscow striker Oumar Niasse after he arrived on Merseyside for a medical. It is understood the Toffees have had a £13.5million bid accepted for the 25-year-old Senegal international and that he is currently at the club’s Finch Farm training ground to discuss personal terms.Niasse has scored 12 goals in 21 games this season and would come in as a replacement for Steven Naismith, who was sold to Norwich for £8.5m earlier in the window.Niasse is likely to be the only player arriving before Monday’s transfer deadline, although the club have confirmed the exit of winger Aiden McGeady, who has joined Championship side Sheffield Wednesday on loan.last_img

first_img1 Schalke have confirmed centre-back Joel Matip will join Liverpool in the summer after signing a pre-contract agreement with the Reds. The 24-year-old will move on a free transfer when his current contract with the Bundesliga side expires at the end of the season. The Cameroon international will reportedly pen a four-year deal at Anfield.Liverpool’s interest in Matip came to light in January, although Schalke resisted a sale and remained hopeful they could convince the defender to sign a new deal with the club. But the player decided to move on instead, with Liverpool reportedly beating two clubs from the French Ligue 1 to sign the highly-rated youngster. In a statement on their official website on Monday afternoon, Schalke confirmed their efforts to convince Matip to stay had been in vain.Chief executive Horst Heldt said: “His decision is nothing against Schalke. He wants to try something new.”“We have since May last year had many intensive discussions, both with Joel and his advisor. It was soon clear that factors would be decisive for Joel’s decision that we ultimately could not influence.”Meanwhile, Matip expressed his excitement to join Liverpool and begin life in the Premier League.“I have always said that there is only one reason I would leave Schalke – to experience something completely new,” said the defender.“For that reason, I never considered a move to another Bundesliga club. Even though the decision wasn’t easy, I am certain that this is the right moment for me to take the next step in my career.“Schalke 04 will always be like my family. I have always been very proud to play for this fantastic club.  “I will give my all in the coming months to ensure that we get the most we can out of this season. I owe that to both the fans and my team.” Schalke centre-back Joel Matip last_img read more

Wilsey said the new strategy provides a stable policing and tactical operation that is flexible so officers can quickly respond to spikes in crime or any unusual crime pattern that develops. In fact, Detective Ismael Navarro, head of the graffiti task force, said the department has had no problem assigning an officer to help with investigations. “I have all the resources of the department to do any operation I need,” he said. MONTEBELLO – The Montebello Police Department has established a new plan to deploy officers, based on the community’s needs, officials said. The plan will be in full force by the end of the month with the addition of a new officer, Capt. Greg Wilsey said. “The intent is to have a seasoned officer be reassigned to our new Crime Suppression Unit once the new officer has finished training as in place on patrol,” he said. The unit, which currently has six officers and a sergeant, handles graffiti and gang problems. The new officer would be assigned, through the crime suppression unit, to graffiti, Wilsey said, to aid Navarro on a daily basis. “The officer will help do research, go to schools to educate children and be trained to testify in court,” Navarro said. “Our goal,” Wilsey said, “is to get rid of tag bangers that terrify neighborhoods; they’re thugs.” Navarro said taggers are no longer just those who deface property, but are part of gangs. And the punishment is changing to fit the crime. “Tagging is no longer just a misdemeanor,” he said. “They can be charged with a felony and sent to prison if the damage is extensive enough.” Other units in the new plan includes a retail enforcement officer, a narcotics unit and a counter officer. Residents and businesses will see an overall increase in service with the implementation of this plan, Wilsey said. sandra.molina@sgvn.com (562) 698-0955, Ext. 3028 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Local residents began excavating in the mine after it was reported that gold had been found deep underground, Delgado said. He added that many of them appeared to have little experience in tunneling or mining, and that rescue efforts were hampered by the lack of any registry or count of how many people entered the mine system. Rich in resources, but with limited government presence across much of the country, Colombia is home to many such makeshift mines, particularly in zones where gold or emeralds have been found. With little to no oversight, mining accidents are a frequent occurrence in this Andean country. By Sergio De Leon THE ASSOCIATED PRESS BOGOTA, Colombia – A makeshift mine in southern Colombia collapsed Saturday after local residents began tunneling for rumored deposits of gold, killing at least 21 people and injuring another 18, authorities said. Efforts were under way to find about 10 people missing and presumed trapped underground in the mine, located near the town of Suarez, 220 miles southwest of the capital, Bogota. last_img read more
