first_imgWith technology changing daily, the question of renting vs buying equipment is a tough one. Let’s explore these options in the context of today’s video production industry. We are at a point where technology is changing faster than we can take advantage of it. As soon as 4K video technology jumped onto the scene, word of 5K, 6K & 8K was on the tips of many tech gurus’ tongues. So, taking into account the rapid acceleration of technology, filmmakers and video producers have to decide the best option for obtaining equipment: renting or buying? First lets look at some of the most important questions, and depending on your answers, this alone may tell you which way you should go.What type of project is it and how long will it take?Is this a small project where you can shoot and edit it in a day, where the income potential is relatively low? Or, is this a project that could weeks to produce, where the income potential is fairly substantial. Let’s explore this a bit…For smaller projects, renting equipment is often the most economical, especially when they require that you won’t be needing on a consistent basis. Sites like Lens Pro to Go and Borrow Lenses have streamlined the rental business through online ordering, and offer relatively inexpensive pricing. For instance, at Borrow Lenses you can currently rent a Canon 5D Mark III for $143 for 7 days. Then add another $70 to cover insurance and shipping and you’re looking at $213.  Most rental companies will throw in some camera accessories with the rental purchase. If it doesn’t come standard be sure to enquire about this!Ensure whatever project you’re working on the cost of the camera rental is built into the quote for your client. If you’re working on a longer project, say, a feature film or television series, it may make the most sense to purchase the equipment and then sell it upon completion of the project. Many reality television projects (that require tons of cameras) work this way. Depending on the amount of usage you may be able to sell the camera for close to what you bought it for (that number will likely be even closer if you bought the camera used originally). If you do buy used be cautious! There is not a shutter actuation count for video (like their is with DSLR photo usage). Be sure to inspect the camera for any scratches, check for dead pixels, ask about the repair history and ALWAYS test shoot with it before handing over money! The other option would be to buy a camera and hold on to it, but you’ve got to factor in how many times you plan on using it a year to see if it’s a worthwhile investment…To help in finding rental options here is a list of rental providers. How many projects are you producing in a year?Lets say that you’re a filmmaker who does commercial work and you produce 3 to 4 projects each month over an entire year. Is renting still your best option? If you’ll be using the same camera in most projects it would obviously make sense to purchase – renting that Canon 5D Mark III once a month would cost you much more than it’s $3,000 purchase price.  There is an old saying that “If you have to borrow a tool more than once, you should probably go ahead and buy one.” The most important thing is to be realistic. For instance, if you’re on an elaborate campaign for a client, don’t immediately run out and rent or buy the equipment just for that campaign. Look ahead and ask yourself, ‘how often will I use this equipment?’ Don’t ‘anticipate’ that you’ll need the camera often until you start renting and shooting with it consistently. Then, make the leap.Be Responsible About Your InvestmentEach option has its strengths and weaknesses. When you rent you’ll get the most current equipment that likely comes insured through the rental provider (be sure to check this!) Additionally, the rental company should be able to quickly find you a replacement camera if the equipment is defective for some reason. With renting you’ll have the freedom to switch cameras, but just like any rental setup, you won’t have any equity in the equipment. When you buy, you don’t have to travel to pick it up or wait for it to ship. Protect your camera and gear investment by insuring it. Don’t assume it is covered under your normal homeowner’s insurance. You may require a “personal articles” policy or even a business insurance plan (some insurance companies require this if you are making money off your equipment). This additional cost may pay for itself in spades if your camera takes a bath or goes missing. first_imgKolkata: With the Congress-CPI(M) proposed alliance falling apart in West Bengal, the stage is set for a four-cornered contest in which the main contenders — the Trinamool Congress and the BJP – are in an advantageous position to consolidate the voters in their favour. According to Trinamool Congress sources, the breakdown augurs well for the party, which would be in a better position to bag the nearly 30-per cent minority votes in the state in the absence of another credible “secular force” in the state. Also Read – Bengal family worships Muslim girl as Goddess Durga in Kumari Puja The CPI(M)-Congress seat-sharing talks failed after the latter accused the Left of insulting it by unilaterally announcing 25 candidates in the state, which has 42 Lok Sabha seats. The cross currrents of the failure to clinch the Opposition alliance will be felt directly in 15 seats spread across north and south Bengal, a TMC leader said. “Although the breakdown of the Opposition alliance has its benefits, it has taken away the buffer from us. Now the maximum anti-TMC votes would be bagged by the BJP, which might alter lot of equations in various seats,” another senior TMC leader said. Also Read – Bengal civic volunteer dies in road mishap on national highway “Had the alliance been there, the anti-TMC votes would have been divided between it and the BJP, which would have helped us,” he told PTI on the condition of anonymity. The TMC will now be directly pitted against the BJP in Cooch Behar, Alipurduar, Raiganj, Balurghat, Malda South in north Bengal; and Murshidabad, Krishnanagar, Ranaghat, Basirhat, Barrackpore, Asansol, Purulia, Jhargram, Bankura and Midnapore seats in south Bengal, sources in the party said. “Had there been an Opposition alliance, we would have been in a comfortable position in most of these seats. But now things will be different. We have full faith in our leadership and things will change once the campaign starts,” a senior TMC leader of north Bengal said. The development has brought cheer to the BJP camp, which has emerged as the main challenger of the TMC in the past few years. The party will be in a better position to find favour with a sizeable portion of the refugee voters in the border districts following its efforts to bring in the citizenship bill. Besides, a section of the Hindu voters, who are unhappy with the “appeasement politics” of the TMC, will support the BJP, said a leader of the saffron party. The refugees have for the past several decades been a trusted vote bank of the Left. The Citizenship Amendment Bill, which was passed in the Lok Sabha on January 8, seeks to grant Indian citizenship to non-Muslims who fled religious persecution from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan, and entered India before December 31, 2014. “Those voters who are disillusioned with the TMC will now vote for BJP as it is only the saffron party which can provide them with an alternative. If the TMC has Mamata Banerjee, we have Narendra Modi and Amit Shah,” said Arjun Singh, a former TMC MLA who had recently switched to the saffron party. Singh is likely to be the BJP’s candidate in Barrackpore Lok Sabha seat, which is held by Dinesh Trivedi of the TMC. Leaders of both the Congress and the CPI(M) agreed that the failure to clinch a seat-sharing deal would actually be a negative factor for both the parties and they might not win more than one or two seats in the state. “It is true that elections will now be more polarised between the TMC and the BJP. But the CPI(M) needs to understand that it has to be more flexible while working in an alliance,” state Congress president Somen Mitra told PTI. CPI(M) central committee leader Sujan Chakraborty, also echoed Mitra’s views but said the Congress should have been more active in order to seal the deal. “The people of the state will decide whether we were right or wrong (in breaking the alliance). Despite a lot of hurdles, we had tried to provide a secular alternative along with the Congress, but it had other plans,” Chakraborty said. The electoral history of Bengal shows that it is the ruling party and the main opposition which become the main beneficiaries in the event of a four-cornered contest. In 2014, the state again witnessed a four-cornered election in which the TMC won 34 seats, the Congress four and the Left and BJP two seats each. The TMC had then secured 39.05 per cent votes, the CPI(M)-led Left Front 29.71 per cent, while the BJP and the Congress had secured 17 percent and 9.5 per cent respectively. The CPI(M)-Congess seat sharing deal in the 2016 state assembly polls had failed to halt the return of the TMC to power, but it was successful in stopping the march of the BJP to an extent. But the alliance fell apart after the poll as the CPI(M) decided to part ways with the Congress since its central committee vetoed it. Since then the BJP has steadily taken over the Opposition space in various by-elections and has emerged as the main challenger to the ruling TMC. Mohammed Kamruzzaman, the general secretary of All Bengal Minority Youth Federation, told PTI that had there been a credible Left-Congress alliance, a percentage of minority votes in north Bengal would have swung in favour of it. “But now minorities would en bloc vote for the TMC to stop the march of the BJP”. Lok Sabha polls will be held in the state in seven phases from April 11.last_img read more

Mr. Kellier, who was speaking during a tour of the Ministry’s Hanover parish office on Friday (September 5), said persons have been complaining that they are not on the PATH list, or that they have been taken off for various reasons.“What I want the public to know is that in every parish, there exists an appeals committee and if for any reason, you have been unjustly removed from the programme or you have not been given access to the programme, make an appeal…so that your case can be revisited,” he stated. He also urged the officers to help dispel “this belief that persons with fridges, stoves and televisions in their houses are not eligible (for PATH)…it’s not true.”Minister Kellier also reiterated his call for PATH beneficiaries to honour their obligations to the programme, including ensuring that children regularly attend school and clinic.“The children must go to the clinic…and they must go to school at a minimum of 85 per cent of the designated school time…otherwise they will find themselves being removed from the programme,” he noted.PATH has an annual budget of over $4 billion and the stipulations must be met as the Government is compelled to make reports to the multi-nationals that fund the programme.Minister Kellier said the Government continues to receive rave reviews from its Caribbean counterparts for its handling of the PATH programme. “The PATH initiative is the flagship poverty (reduction) programme of the Government and it is the best run programme in the entire Caribbean when it comes to social protection. Other governments are sending their representatives here to learn from us about how we run this programme because the international agencies have confirmed that Jamaica has one of the best run social protection programmes,” he said. – 30 –CONTACT: MARLON TINGLING JIS REGIONAL OFFICE MONTEGO BAYlast_img read more
