PALMDALE – A 14-passenger school bus equipped with lap and shoulder safety belts is going into service hauling students from the Antelope Valley Union High School District, and Lancaster, Keppel and Westside elementary school districts. The Corbeil bus equipped with padded high-back seats and belts was won by Antelope Valley Union School District through a drawing sponsored by seat manufacturer IMMI SafeGuard. “It could be used for small athletic teams, special trips, post-season trips,” Superintendent David Vierra said. The high school district won the bus after chief financial officer Ken Scott attended a school bus safety presentation last summer hosted by Palmdale School District. Scott dropped his business card in the drawing, which SafeGuard sponsored for all California public and private schools who attended its sales presentations. The bus will be operated by the Antelope Valley Schools Transportation Agency, which buses pupils for the high school district as well as for Lancaster, Keppel and Westside elementary school districts. The school bus agency already has 14-passenger buses with lap belts, mainly used for special education pupils and other youngsters with special needs, said chief executive officer Jene Jansen. This will be the school bus agency’s first bus with shoulder belts, Jansen said. To replace aging full-size vehicles, the school bus agency expects to buy about 10 buses a year, with delivery starting probably next winter or spring, that will carry lap and shoulder belts under the new state law. “It’s exciting. It’s a change,” Jansen said. Charles F. Bostwick, (661) 267-5742 [email protected] 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
