Myers, Executive Director, Messengers of Peace-Liberia, Inc.Liberians were expected to go to for the run-off Presidential elections on Tuesday 7 November 2017 but this did not happen due to the Supreme Court refrain order to the National Elections Commission.Liberia, in our opinion, is too quiet, everyone is going about their business as if nothing is amiss and this is concerning. The unspoken words out there are not comforting either. There are too many rumours and murmurs are not in the best interest of the country. The spoken word out there is laden with threats, allegations and innuendoes, there are more questions than answers and discussions around the street corners, in homes and social areas on who is wrong, what is wrong and who should not be allowed to rule. Would the Presidential runoff elections process be delayed longer than it is necessary and if so, for how long?Uncertainty on when and if the next Presidential runoff elections would take place raises grave concerns on constitutional mandates and its timeframe. Young people, particularly the first time voters, are afraid and need reassurance. We should not let our young voters down as the fire of conflict is sparked the longer ongoing electoral issue(s) remain unresolved. We need to change our dialogue and allow established political mechanisms to take their course. Our politicians should put the interest of the country above individual ambition. Country first! We are of the view that heads of the various political parties should remain committed to peace consolidations and supporters of the various political parties are requested to remain objective. Liberia is not the first country to be so tested but it is important that electoral dispute-resolution be conducted in a transparent, timely, fair and objective way.Volunteer Peace Messengers are of the opinion that instead of wheeling and dealing, we should be dialoguing and mediating. We need political peace and call for the resolution of this impasse. The registered Liberian voters would like to make this election meaningful. In Romans 8:26 we are reminded that, “…the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans”.Until next week, when we hope for a resolution, we want to encourage everyone to allow peace prevail. As time goes on and in line with Frank Sinatra’s song, “Stick with your own team” vote peace and let us make this election meaningful. Peace above all else, peace first and May peace prevail in our era. #Peace, my democratic choiceShare this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more
